The NSW State Reserves side were crowned the champions of the Inaugural Soldiers Point Classic held at Soldiers Point Bowling Club.
Finishing the 4-way Round Robin event equal on six (6) points with the Emerging Jackaroos Side, the NSW Reserves won the contest with a +35 margin over their counterparts whose margin was -2.
In a greatly contested tournament, the NSW Over 40’s opened their account with a 54-42 win over the Emerging Jackaroos.
Their momentum stopped there however, going down in a nail-biter to NSW Reserves 54-55 in Round 2 and finishing their campaign with a 42-52 loss to the NSW Senior Blues (Over 60’s).
The Emerging Jackaroos steadied their ship with a win against the Over 60s and managed to overcome the eventual winners, 53-47, however it wasn’t enough to overturn the margin deficit to the NSW Reserves, which was aided by a massive 77-37 win against the NSW Over 60s.
The NSW Reserve Side were presented with the Jim Richardson Shield, named in honour of the current Chairman and Club stalwart of Soldiers Point Bowling Club.
“It was a great hit-out for all our representative teams who are always looking to force their way into the selectors notepads,” suggested NSW chairman of selectors, Ken Oliver.
“The addition of the Over 40’s and playing against the quality of the Emerging Jackaroos has proven to be fruitful for all of our sides.
“It is a great preparation, in particular our Seniors, who head to South Australia to compete in the upcoming National Senior Sides Championships in October.”
Jackaroos assistant coach and NSW Head Coach, Gary Willis said he was happy with the opportunities provided by the tournament.
“It certainly strengthens our pathways in NSW and Soldiers Point should also be congratulated,” Willis said.
“We really look forward to creating this as part of the ongoing calendar, particularly an opportunity for the Emerging Jackaroos.”
Bowls NSW would like to thank Soldiers Point Bowling Club for hosting the event and congratulate all those involved in making it a great tournament.
